Dear Friends of Ndutu

For our friends who missed the facebook announcement in December, It is with great sadness that we would like to let you know that our dear friend, colleague and Guide Marando died from wounds sustained in an elephant attack.  He died in ICU in Arusha, two days later. The staff at the lodge all did an incredible job under very difficult circumstances to apply immediate first aid, and to drive him to Endulan hospital where he was stabalised and prepared for air evacuation to Arusha.

Our special thanks go to Ingela Jansson of Kope Lion who just happened to be at the lodge and was able to help with first aid, all the staff of Ndutu Safari Lodge, The staff at Endulen Hospital where he was stabilized, The support of the NCAA, Father Pat and his staff of Flying Medical Service for his mercy flight and ongoing care and help in Arusha, The staff at Selian Hospital (Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre) in Arusha. Despite all they were able to do, his injuries were too severe for his survival.

Marando had worked at Ndutu for 26 years. This is one of those unfortunate accidents that can happen when you spend 26 years of your life working in the bush and around wildlife.

For many years Marando introduced guests from all over the world to the wonders of the wildlife around us, and many of these guests would return time and time again to spend time with Marando on safari.

Many of you who know Marando will remember him as a quite, gentle, calm man with impecabble manners and an enormous heart. He had a complete passion for the wildlife at Ndutu. Marando knew all of our lions by name and had an uncanny knack of knowing where they were and how to find them. He seemed to think like a cat. He would stubbornly turn every game drive into a search for lions, and refuse to acknoweldge that anything other than lions could be interesting!

Marando leaves behind a wife, a 12 year old daughter and a 6 month old son in a country where there is no governmental support.  Ndutu Safari Lodge has set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to be able to support his family in the years ahead.

We are asking all who knew Marando to come together and support his family.

With best wishes to you all for a safe and happy New Year
